Fridley’s Environmental Initiatives: A Community Commitment to Sustainability

Fridley, Minnesota, is making significant strides in environmental sustainability through a series of infrastructure upgrades, water quality improvements, and community engagement initiatives.

Infrastructure Enhancements

The city’s Public Works Department has been instrumental in transforming Fridley’s infrastructure to create safer, more connected neighborhoods while protecting the environment. In 2025, over $50 million was invested in infrastructure improvements, including the 44th Avenue Bridge and Trail project, which aims to complete a critical gap in the Regional Bicycle Transportation Network by June 2026. This project connects the Mississippi River Regional Trail to Main Street’s multi-use trail, providing families with safe routes for biking and walking across the community.

Additionally, the 57th Avenue Northtown Yard Overpass Bridge project is set to connect East River Road to University Avenue over the BNSF rail yard. Securing $16 million in federal Reconnecting Communities funding in 2025, this $32 million project is expected to be completed in 2028, ending years of detours for thousands of residents and creating new multimodal connections that simplify daily life.

Water Quality Improvements

Ensuring clean, safe water for residents is a top priority. The Locke Park Water Treatment Plant is slated to receive $6 million in upgrades in 2026, adding advanced filtration to remove PFAS contamination from wells and protect against future contaminants. This proactive investment in public health is funded through a $3 million state grant and a low-interest revolving loan.

In 2020, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) removed the Fridley Commons Park Well Field Superfund Site from the National Priorities List, determining that the required cleanup was complete. The city continues to monitor the municipal wells and water distribution system to ensure water quality remains within safe standards.

Community Engagement and Education

Fridley actively engages the community in environmental stewardship. The annual Environmental Fun Fair at Springbrook Nature Center offers residents an opportunity to learn about sustainability through interactive exhibits, games, and activities. The event features environmental and educational exhibitors, crafts, a bouncy castle, a pop-up community toy store, food trucks, a book swap, and more.

These initiatives reflect Fridley’s commitment to fostering a sustainable and environmentally conscious community, ensuring a healthier and more connected future for all residents.
