Fridley is actively enhancing its environment through infrastructure upgrades, water quality projects, and community engagement.
Infrastructure Improvements
The city has undertaken significant infrastructure projects to promote sustainability. The 44th Avenue Bridge and Trail improvements aim to complete a critical gap in the Regional Bicycle Transportation Network, connecting the Mississippi River Regional Trail to Main Street’s multi-use trail. This project is expected to be completed by June 2026. Additionally, the 57th Avenue Northtown Yard Overpass Bridge project will connect East River Road to University Avenue over the BNSF rail yard, with completion anticipated in 2028. These projects enhance connectivity and encourage eco-friendly transportation options.
Water Quality Enhancements
Fridley is committed to improving water quality through various initiatives. The East Moore Lake Biochar and Iron-Enhanced Sand Filter project treats stormwater runoff from a 94-acre area surrounding Moore Lake, removing pollutants such as nutrients, bacteria, and sediment. This effort addresses the lake’s designation as impaired due to excess nutrients. Additionally, the Apex Pond Enhancement Project involved dredging overgrown vegetation and sediment buildup, increasing stormwater storage volume, and installing new shrub plantings to enhance the pond’s functionality and aesthetics.
Community Engagement
Community involvement plays a vital role in Fridley’s environmental efforts. The annual Environmental Fun Fair at Springbrook Nature Center offers residents educational exhibits, games, crafts, and activities focused on environmental stewardship. This free event fosters a sense of community and encourages sustainable practices among residents.
Through these initiatives, Fridley demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, enhancing the quality of life for its residents and setting an example for neighboring communities.
